Founding EMO 1972
In 1972 construction of 'Verenigd Overslagbedrijf Maasvlakte N.V.' started.
First vessel unloaded
On 28 November the first vessel, MS Proserpina, with 77,606 tonnes of iron ore on board, was unloaded and the terminal was then officially operational.
First 85-tonne vessel unloader. The biggest in the world.
A rapid and dynamic development then followed. A train loader installation was added, along with a third conveyer with stacker-reclaimer, and the conveyor system was expanded. A highlight was the commissioning of the 85-tonne vessel unloader, the biggest in the world, in 1981.
Operational 24/7
In 1984 the company switched from a system with three teams in semi-continuous shifts to a system with five teams in round-the-clock shifts.
Washing and screening installation operational. Since 2017 special coals are washed and screened here which are used as a raw material for the silicon industry, such as solar panels and computer chips.

In the following years, we also got our ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 certifications.
Ccommissioning of our extensive dust monitoring network. Here, 24/7 monitoring takes place on and around our terminal, with 7 measuring points that are continuously displayed in the control room, at our security desk and supervisors.
37 million tonnes unloaded: a record year
Between 1999 and 2008 supplies rose steadily, culminating in a record transhipment of 37 million tonnes in 2008. The long-term prospects and developments at nearby companies were an incentive to invest in a large number of projects.
In 2012 we were proud to welcome the first Valemax with 370,000 tonnes of iron ore on board, and our 5th vessel unloader (3rd in the 85-tonne class) went into operation.
